What I Learn When I Meet New People

I had a long conversation with a delightful woman yesterday. I asked her what she did for a living and she said she was a stripper.

After ensuring that she was not joking, I asked her a bunch of questions about her job.

Here’s what we have in common:

  • She has to find new clients all the time.
  • I have to find new clients all the time.

  • She has to figure out what clients really want.
  • I have to figure out what clients really want.

  • Her business took a huge hit with the pandemic.
  • My business took a huge hit with the pandemic

  • She tries to make people laugh.
  • I try to make people laugh.

  • She focuses on building her brand and being the best in the region.
  • I focus on building my brand and being the best in the world.

Here’s where we differ

  • She takes off her clothes in front of clients.
  • Some of my clients have seen my elbows, and a couple might have seen my ankles.

It was a fascinating reminder that people who we think of as oh, so different, aren’t generally very different from us after all.

  1. LOVE that! A reminder in these times that we are more alike than different after all!!

  2. Lol! Love it.

I’d also actually love an HR article on the adult industries. I think Ask A Manager did something similar once and it was really interesting.

  3. Strip clubs probably don’t have HR Departments. But, if they did, it would be interesting to hear how they handle sexual harassment issues.

    1. Ann Fromholz is an attorney in California that sometimes works with the “adult” industry. She wrote an article a few years ago about the difference between nudity/porn at work when it’s work related and when it’s not. But I can’t find it!

  4. So funny and true. I worked in that industry for many years as a server and bartender (doesn’t make me better or worse than the actual strippers, just made less money), and you want to know something sad? I was treated better there and had more fun than I have had at almost every other job I have had.
