Patrick--

I agree. Karma so applies in business. People who are mean and ruthless think that because they are in positions of power now they always will be.

When I train people on how to lay people off, I always remind them that the goal is no lawsuit and angry, bitter people are more likely to sue.

Lawsuits are lose-lose situations when severance is involved. (Generally speaking.)

FHL, I edited to make it clear that I've been involved in laying off over 1000 people, not 1000 different layoffs. Yikes!

Fortunately, it's never my fault. :>)

I work for a very large company so even a small percent reduction is a large amount of individuals. Most of those layoffs involved groups of 10-20 people. Some were much larger.

And I like the idea of going from company to company getting laid off. Get a nice package each time. Yippee!

Ack! You've been personally involved in 1000 layoffs? (Are you exaggerating? Or is that 1000 people total spread over many group layoffs?) Does that speak for poor personnel planning / management or just the typical industry downturns? (Note: I'm not suggesting that YOU were at fault in any way, I just meant poor forecasting in general.)

I would just like to add that in all the layoffs I've seen, I've never seen or heard of anyone doing anything malicious on their way out . Although, I have heard lots of "Man, I wish I'd..." in the passing time. =)

I've personally been laid off twice and both times caught me completely by surprise, no warning. The severance packages have been nice, but I sure wish there had been more placement offers or something. (At least with Lockheed, I would have expected more.)

Hmmm, I wonder if there's a germ of a story in here. Someone who goes from company to company with the goal of being laid off, sort of like the people in Runaway Jury who move and change identities to try to get onto the right jury. Seems like it would require too much work for too little of a payout.

You are spot on with this. I could not agree more. It seems that all too often businesses forget the "do unto others rule" and it comes back to bite them. Karma applies in business too! If you treat people decently, you are much less likely to have them come back to visit you with a weapon.
