I wish someone was giving me extra money! But, sadly, no. If you look through my archives you'll see that I, rather regularly, write about companies who are doing things right. It's not meant to be investigative reporting. It's meant to give other managers ideas on how to do it.

People actually value perks at a higher level than their cash equivalent. Joining AnyPerk, for instance, costs a company $5 per employee, per month. No one is going to care about a $5 a month salary increase, but they do like gym membership discounts, cell phone discounts, etc, that are greater than the $5 cost to the company.

If you really want to keep me happy at my job, forget the gimmicky perks and just give me the cash you would have spent on them. The only kind of perks I'd really be interested in are things that actually make my life easier, like flexible work hours or a nicer office.

And do companies really think that a discount on my phone plan would be enough to make me stay at a job that I would otherwise want to leave?
