It’s easier to get honest references this way. And if you ask the right questions, it’s easy to get answers and feedback. Most people will list references that they KNOW might sugar-coat what they say. Although I had one candidate who had bad references from everyone he listed, and a couple of other candidates who listed companies on the resume that were non-existent! Google, 411, etc….. not one of them could find any of the company names.
