I got unexpectedly laid off from my last job on a Thursday. I filed for unemployment online the second I got home (it was right after lunch). Then I took Friday to run some errands and get my resume cleaned up. Saturday and Sunday were recovery days. Because gah!

I cannot emphasize enough to file for unemployment IMMEDIATELY. It takes a week to process even if they get it right away. Lucky for me, I had six weeks’ severance pay, but I filed anyway and they started it the week after my severance ran out.

A firing for cause should never be a surprise, IMO. I know many managers suck at documentation and discipline, but if you are fired for misbehavior, you should have seen that one coming.
