Sorry about Mikey, and hope he gets better with the vet's help. As to asking for help at work, it all depends on the atmosphere at work as not every work environment encourages outlets for stress outside of work that is affecting work performance and not everyone considers their work "friends" inclusive in their outside personal life. If there is as mentioned in the article a program to assist employees through a stressful time ( whatever the reason financial, personal tragedy, environmental, like hurricanes and blizzards) that should be given information in an orientation package to be used as needed if wanted. HR should always keep abreast of these programs and keep them current and don't allow them to be removed as a cost-savings measure by the company.
As for Mikey, as a fellow cat owner, I have learned to be very aware of my cat's activity, especially his feeding and pooping, and get very worried if he vomits at any time. May I recommend you get a subscription to Cat watch newsletters to get to know your cats better.
