If you prefer to read, Neelie helpfully included this roundup–not a complete transcript as she probably got bored typing all my “umms”

HR lessons from 2020

SL: There are so many things that we’ve learned in HR this year. One of those things indeed goes back to working from home because before Covid everybody said that the number one benefit they wanted was the option to work from home. Some people have been thrilled about it and some companies have completely closed their offices and will never go back. Other people, however, have learned that they actually love the office.

I think this gives us a mind switch in HR. For years, we’ve been fighting with business leaders and said that if a job can be done from home there is no reason it shouldn’t be done from home and we’ve been pushing for that. Now we have got to take a step back and ask ourselves whether that’s best for our people. If it isn’t best for our people, then it isn’t best for our business because what we need is happy people.

With social media, you can chat with friends, share funny memes, and tweet angry things into the internet void. Social collaboration uses the same tools (and can include the same behaviors), but the goals are different; this is the business side of social media.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at social collaboration; what it is, what the benefits are, and what best practices you can follow. We’ll also share some examples of social collaboration software. Here goes!

What is social collaboration?

Networking is the standard way business people connect. It’s a concept that has gone on for as long as people have been trading goods and services. Social collaboration is networking gone digital.

Instead of coming together in the town square or at a networking meeting, people come together online and work together. You can “meet” people on LinkedIn, Twitter, or any number of websites and create professional relationships. People can recommend others for new jobs or contract work based on these digital-only relationships.

Even though I spent Halloween in my apartment watching Hocus Pocus with my children and had precisely two trick-or-treaters that were pre-arranged, I saw hundreds of costumed children in my Facebook feed.

You no longer have to do things in-person to know what goes on in your friends’ lives. The same is true in the workplace. In 1997 it would have taken a great deal of effort to show the HR manager an inappropriate Halloween costume picture. You would have had to be at the same party as your inappropriately dressed coworker, take a photo on film, get the film developed and bring it to the office.

At this point, the HR manager wouldn’t care because it was 1997, and no one cared. And unless it made the nightly news (it didn’t), it wouldn’t reflect on the company at all.

Neelie from AIHR: Can you write an article for us?
Me: Sure. Any topics?
Neelie: Perhaps how in the ^*!&#$ HR is supposed to prepare for 2021?

Ahh, this is such a good question.

HR people have to plan – we have cyclical things we plan for. We know that the fourth quarter brings performance appraisals and year-end raises, and the fiscal year ends in July, so we need to be prepared with a budget. We know that sexual harassment, code of conduct, and diversity training all need to be completed by a specific date, and then we get to follow up with people who skipped out.

This, we’re good at doing.

Unemployment is through the roof, and there are absolutely no jobs available right now. Or, is it: Companies are desperate to hire and cannot get enough qualified applicants?

It’s both. And it’s peculiar. COVID has split the hiring world between high unemployment in some sectors and people scrambling to get enough people in others. It’s weird, but it also opens up opportunities for all sorts of people.

So, let’s look at the positive side!

LinkedIn has a “Who’s Hiring Right Now” column that is updated regularly. For instance, at this moment, the top five hiring companies say,

Instacart says it’s looking to hire 300,000 contract workers.

McDonald’s says it’s hiring about 260,000 people this summer.

Amazon says it’s looking to hire 175,000 new workers for its fulfillment centers and delivery network.

Albertsons is hiring 50,000 people across their companies for open roles.

CVS Health is hiring 50,000 employees to serve in various capacities across its business.

That’s an awful lot of jobs. It also shows that a lot of mass hiring is in the unskilled or entry-level category. But, let’s unpack all of this.

I talk about when things get back to “normal” all the time, but that’s never happening. We will be creating a new normal after all the stay at home orders are lifted. What will HR look like in this new world? Well, here are some guesses.

More knowledgeable HR

Human resources is a multi-disciplinary field. You need to be everything from a finance expert to a therapist to a salesperson to a lawyer if you want to do everything right. This is especially the case for HR generalists in smaller businesses who have to do it all.

During these last few weeks, HR and employee relations people have had changes thrown at them at top speed. The Family First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) added new programs for small businesses that required knowledgeable HR. The Payroll Protection Program put requirements around how many people you could terminate and how your payroll needed to look. These things fell squarely on the heads of the HR managers. Those are only two of the many, many changes HR had to sort through.
