Are Career Goals Always Necessary? What if I’m Happy Where I Am?

I have been with my current role for about a year, but one thing that has been driving me crazy is how development-focused the entire organization is. It is a continual topic that management speaks about ad nauseam, to the point where it feels disingenuous. Like, do they really want me to grow, or are these just steps that they want everyone to take regardless of their skill set?

I am all for goals or improving in your role, but I am not motivated by goals or growth or anything like that. I am happy where I am. While I do want to learn and grow (I mean, who doesn’t want to make more money), I don’t feel like I need a billion goals to be successful.

  1. This is a great article about a viewpoint concerning staying in a job beyond the need to keep constantly progressing upwards. Yes, you want to do your job as efficiently as possible but that should be to make your life and your personal lifestyle outside of work better. Remember that upward mobility requires more effort to maintain consistently and if you are the type of personality that prefers a less effort on your part, perhaps you have found that niche in your present position. You are getting recognized for your work performance, you are getting yearly pay increases and you are getting expanded benefits that grow as you stay on and achieve a tenure of sorts at your position. Isn’t that the main goal of working–earn enough for your needs and have enough to enjoy a happy life outside work.
