The 25 Top Paying Jobs List Is Here! Here’s Why You Should Ignore It

Do you want to be rich? Of course, you do. Do you want your children to be rich so that they can support you in the style to which you’d like to become accustomed? Of course, you do. So you scour these lists and say, “Junior! Get a good grade in biology so you can go to medical school!” Right? Of course right.

Forget these lists. They are not the way to financial independence. Let’s look at the numbers. These are median salaries, so 50 percent of people make more and 50 percent make less.

  1. Physician $187,876
  2. Pharmacy manager $149,064
  3. Patent attorney $139,272
  4. Medical science liaison $132,842

Those salaries look pretty good, but not a single one of them will put you into the top 1 percent. What is the top 1 percent in the US? $434,682 or around that and $214,462 to crack the top 5 percent. Not even the average physician cracks the top 5 percent–and keep in mind it takes years and years of school and training to get that job. Those years are when you’re not earning or saving or investing anything.

  1. Money is great. Money is AWESOME!! But FAR MORE IMPORTANT is doing what you love. I don’t make a lot of money but after 27 years in radio (and now working from home for various radio stations across the country and doing voice work-commercials for radio/TV, narrating medical videos, etc…), I absolutely still love it. Do what you love. Far more important.

  2. For me, being in the top 1% would never ever be worth it. Too many hours!!! There’s a lot to be said for a professional job with a decent paycheck, but in school no one is really clear about the tradeoffs.

  3. Wow. Just start a business that can make me $300,000 a year.

Why didn’t I think of that?
