Why a New Employee Dress Code is Part of a Brewing Turnaround at Starbucks

“I’ve never cared what my barista is wearing when she hands me my drink and my breakfast.”

“This will make a big difference. A touch of professionalism goes a long way.”

These two very different responses span the range of reactions to Starbucks’ announcement that it is updating its dress code for in-store staff. Employees will now have to wear “any solid black short and long-sleeved crewneck, collared, or button-up shirts and any shade of khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms.”

This renewed focus on consistency is a small, but telling component of a larger effort to turn Starbucks around under new CEO Brian Niccol.
