Do you remember the old Bob Newhart sketch where he’s a therapist who says he can fix any problem in under 5 minutes? And so when the patient tells him her problems (fear of being buried alive in a box, among other things), he simply replies, “Stop it.” That’s the solution. Stop it. Stop panicking.
That’s where I am with the current panic over “job hugging.” Although, to be fair, I think it’s a fake panic. I haven’t heard anyone complain about it. It hasn’t come up in my 34k-member Improve Your HR Facebook group. None of my HR colleagues has brought it up. It’s just a big nothing.
Job hugging is simply staying in a job because you’re concerned about the economy, and a secure job is better than the unknown.
This is not a new phenomenon. It’s not something HR needs to be concerned about. But we can make it sound like one.
