President Donald Trump fired the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, stating, without evidence, that she falsified job numbers to assist Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Trump then accused her of rigging the numbers this summer, as revisions included a drop of 258,000 jobs.
There is no indication that McEntarfer was acting in a partisan manner. Despite Trump’s claims that she boosted employment numbers to benefit Harris, the BLS announced the overstating of 818,000 in August 2024. You can argue that fewer people see the revisions than the original numbers (which is undoubtedly true). Still, if McEntarfer wanted to tweak the numbers to support Harris, she could have held off until after the election.
This drop of 258,000 for the two months of May and June is the second significant error under McEntarfer, and that’s where the problem lies.
