Your business depends on getting quality employees into the right roles, and sometimes your biggest barrier to that is your managers. A Reddit post on r/recruitinghell shared a story of a job interview where the hiring manager damaged the company’s reputation.
After following the code for a while, I figure out that it counts the number of times a particular string is used and assigns it an integer based on that. He says that’s correct and asks how I can make it better.
I respond, “Hash table.”
The manager says that’s not a good solution. The OP continues:
I get really confused and am questioning everything I learned in college at this point, and he keeps badgering me for a better solution.
I finally tell him I can only think of hash tables, and he responds, “Everyone I interview says hash tables. That’s not the [f-ing] answer and I don’t know why they say that.”
After the OP tried to think of a better answer and was unable to, the interviewer moved on to another question that the OP stumbled on. Undoubtedly already frustrated by the hash tables problem, the interviewer responded:
