“HR is the only department that gets a free pass for being completely useless.”
Ahh, yes, it’s time for another rant about how awful HR is. This is from Amanda Goodall, who calls herself The Job Chick, posting on the social media platform X. She does corporate research.
When people dismiss HR as worthless, or worse, damaging, it’s generally based on a very narrow view of what HR does. Which makes sense, since most people go throughout their career without much direct contact with HR.
And good HR is invisible. When things just run as they should, employee engagement is high, and harassment is nonexistent, it’s because there is good HR behind the scenes making sure all this stuff happens. But when things go poorly, you notice. So, the viewpoint that HR is worthless is a popular opinion. People love to hate HR because they see us as what XX-XY Athletics CEO Jennifer Sey calls “officious hall monitors.”

Compliance, risk management, and company culture aren’t ‘revenue-generating’ areas, yet without them, companies crater.” It’s great to be invisible.
