Want a Smart Business Move? Try Introducing Flexibility

Think about your ideal job. Does it involve getting to work at the crack of dawn, barely having time to grab lunch, and getting home after dark—even in the summer? Of course not. The ideal job allows time for family and friends, as well as a good pay check and a challenging work environment.

Bosses want an ideal employee. They may think that is someone who comes early and stays late and takes no breaks, but that’s a recipe for disaster. An employee like that will burn out quickly. So, while you may think someone who does nothing but work is ideal, the reality is a well-balanced employee will be productive for a long time to come.

How do you get that well-balanced employee?

You give them a chance for balance. You set the environment that will help them gain balance in their lives.

Yes, you can develop this type of well-balanced employee through offering flexible schedules and telecommuting.

  1. The only thing that I would see as an issue is the perception by other team members who are hourly and may not be afforded the flexibility – That’s something I’m experiencing at my company and not quite sure how to relay that so folks don’t feel like there is unequal treatment. I’d be interested in hearing suggestions and Ideas for that. Thank you!

    1. I’m hourly and work from home one day a week. I clock in and out just like I would in the office, but from my virtual workstation instead of my PC in the office.
If I wasn’t actually working, it would be obvious because my productivity would go down. But that would be the same if I was salary or hourly.

  2. My boss is in a different state so I only see her once every few months or less. She freaks out if one of us, hundreds of miles away, isn’t in the office every day, even though she never knows the difference. I occasionally take my notebook computer, the same one I use in the office home and work there and never tell her. I can set my office phone to simultaneously ring to my home phone so I pick up on the second ring all the time (I don’t get the first ring at home). I work with her and others all day long and she never knows where I am. I get all my work done and am in constant electronic and phone contact with everyone I need all day long. Shhh. Don’t tell her.
