Public speaking is my favorite part of my job and the pandemic basically destroyed that, so when JobCon 2021 asked me to keynote their virtual event, I jumped at the chance. I figured it would be via a normal video conference, but they had a surprise: Virtual reality. You know, with that weird headset and hand controls.

I was skeptical, but said, what the heck, let’s do it.

Plus, my teens were super excited about the free Oculus headset JobCon sent me to do the presentation. Admittedly, I had them set up the system and teach me how to use it. They taught me, and I wrote the speech and it was a success. Here’s what happened and what I learned.

  1. Interesting concept but definitely not for everyone because of that dizziness effect. I have seen the VR experience as a viewer outside the actual user, and yes, you definitely need to be in a controlled setting while wearing them ( like not seeing the cat). You, the one wearing the VR, are totally immersed in the VR, which is why gamers who use these are in a seated position and use arm motions to move their avatars. Good to hear that you survived your experience.
