My phone is such a distraction to me, so I decided to leave it on the other side of the room during my workday, unless I had to make an actual call. (Shudder.)
So, I put it across the room from me and set about to do all my work.
1. I need my Microsoft Authenticator to get into Inc’s CMS. <grabs phone>
2. I need to access my bank account, and that requires hitting authorize on the bank app on my phone <grabs phone>
3. I need to download my credit card statement for September so I can put in my expenses. I need to hit authorize on the credit card app on my phone <grabs phone>
4. Ugggh, somehow I got logged out of a Gmail account. To get back in, I need to open Gmail on my phone. <grabs phone>
5. Gotta update my website in Wix. Oh, can’t do that without hitting authorize on the Wix app on my phone <grabs phone>
It’s hopeless. If I lose my phone, I can’t work or manage my finances.
And I look back to 1998 when I told my boyfriend he was ridiculous for buying a cell phone. Why on earth would anyone need a cell phone?
I think I was on to something back then.
Preaching to the choir sister!
Just today my phone stopped working. Found out the bank had a fraud alert, contacted my SO and he confirmed it was not fraud but the card was still blocked to make a recurring payment for phone service. Can’t do anything without your phone but take a walk in the woods.
Amen. You don’t actually NEED to own a cell phone. Despite what people think (have been taught to think), these beeping distraction devices are almost entirely unnecessary and, as you’ve noted, hinder your life. Trading focus, privacy and original thought for blinking lights and perceived convenience is a bad deal for anyone who doesn’t run a cell phone company.
