Is taking 2-3 days off per month an abuse of the system if you have unlimited PTO? It is if those 2-3 days are for chemotherapy, according to Tyler Wells‘ company.
When Wells received his cancer diagnosis, his HR department told him that it would be an abuse of the system, and his time off for treatment would be considered unpaid FMLA.
With a traditional PTO plan, he could have used PTO to cover those days off instead of being left high and dry.
If you’re going to make your finance department happy with an unlimited PTO plan, please consider designated sick days and make it very clear to your employees that the “unlimited” part only applies to vacation, and it’s not really unlimited time off–it’s a secret amount of time off.
I hate unlimited PTO plans, and this is just one more reason why.
